Speaker Laurie Cooper the enthusiastic and heartwarming; the founder of Canada Caring initiated an advocacy, support and sponsor, not for profit organization that has assisted numerous immigrants who were previously refugees, Shown with one of her 'survivors' Mohamed who now works at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler told us his wrenching tale of escape. Retired lawyer, dedicated humanitarian and local resident Michael Blaxland was inducted into the Rotary Club of Whistler on the evening of July 23 rd. We gave a welcoming cheer to Michael. His knowledge and interests will be very much appreciated. Michael quickly stepped up to sell tickets at our dusty's Pancake Breakfast Rotary Club of Whistler Foundation Scholarship winner Lauren Wentzel, was awarded her scholarship on the evening of July 23. Although Lauren’s name was misspelled on the mock cheque we got it right on the real one that gets deposited into the bank. This September 2019 Lauren is going to the University of Calgary to start Engineering studies and will keep in touch. Shown presenting the Foundation cheque is Rotary Club of Whistler Vice President Marg Pallot. David Oakes a dedicated regular at Iron Man is shown on duty for the Iron Man athlete's sign in at the Olympic Plaza in Whistler. David leaves us in September for Comox on Vancouver Island where he will unite with Vancouver Island Rotarians. We hope his new club appreciates what we have lost. All the best David and Brenda.
