Paint & Wine Bear with Me Virtual Event
Jun. 15, 2021
Please join us for what we hope will be our last fully zoom social and fundraising event.
Don't forget to hit submit at the end of answering all the sections on the registration page!
Why are we doing this? Firstly - to have fun! But also to raise some funds to help us build the Rotary Viewing Platform along the new section of the Valley Trail along the wetlands between Alta Lake Road and Function. We hope to acquire most of our needs by donation but will need funds for some purchases. We have many willing hands itching to get started on this and complete it this summer.
The plan for the evening-
6.30 logon opens.
We hope you enjoy your wine throughout the evening.
6.45 Lorne will talk to us about the Pentage wines that are recommended for the evening and which you are able to purchase at a discount price courtesy of Whistler Liquor Store at Rainbow.
Pentage is a boutique farm-gate winery nestled on 35 acres overlooking Skaha Lake in Penticton. Julie and Paul have 2 vineyards that are hand tended and picked to produce top-quality grapes that are essential in the creation of hand-crafted, limited-release world-class wines. So far I have tried the Gamay Noir and the Pinot Gris and they are excellent.
7.00 pm the painting session begins. Cary from Paintertainmentwill lead us in creating a wonderful (we hope it turns out wonderful) painting of a Whistler Rotary Bear.
Cary& Paulo together are the creative force behind PAINTERTAINMENT. They started out creating the most fabulous walking art for large events. With Covid, they have diversified and one of their new activities has been online painting lessons. The wonderful paintings by Ken Martin of their family pets are a testament to their skill in teaching, and of course Ken's hidden talent.
8.45ish! We have our Raffle with lots of great prizes as always, followed by a Live Auction. We will send you info about the auction items as we gather them.
I look forward to joining with lots of you to create my special Rotary Bear and have fun!

Future of Rural and Small Communities
Jul. 20, 2021
Ken Coates is Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan. His work focuses on the development of strategies to promote 21st century well-being in small town, rural, Indigenous and remote Canada. Ken's major project examines the potential contributions -- and negative impacts -- of emerging technologies on rural and remote communities.
Rural areas and small towns around the world face formidable challenges. On a global scale, the rapid growth of urban population has left many areas with fewer young people and often major shortages of workers. Governments, with their power bases set in the cities, pay less attention to rural regions. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced a counter-wave, with thousands leaving the cities for work at home opportunities in smaller centres. Wither rural and small town Canada? Is the pandemic shift temporary? Will new working technologies result in people moving to and staying in smaller communities? The answers are complex, for it is clear that economic restructuring in Canada is changing some of the fundamental elements in rural and small town life, with the quality of the lived experience serving as a core attraction for people with the skills and income to pick their place of residence. Dr. Ken Coates is Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation, University of Saskatchewan. His talk will highlight the forces of change -- and the efforts being made by rural areas and small towns to resist the mass urbanization of the world.

Squamish River Watershed Society Restoration and Educational Outreach Programs and Activities
Jul. 27, 2021
Edith Tobe is the Executive Director of the Squamish River Watershed Society "The SRWS formed in 1998 with a holistic approach towards watershed restoration. To date our organization has assessed over 144 watercourses in the Squamish and Lillooet River watersheds and restored thousands of metres of habitat for salmon and other wildlife. In 2005 the SRWS expanded our operations to include and education outreach program that engages over 600 students annually in outdoor experiential learning. The work the SRWS undertakes looks at the headwaters in the upper watershed all the way down to the estuary and into Howe Sound and includes scientific and state of the art methodology and monitoring programs. In the mid-1990's the SRWS worked closely with the forest industry as part of the Forest Renewal BC Watershed Restoration Program and then in the early 2000's the restoration focused more on salmon habitat and restoring estuarine function. Throughout our years of operations we have maintained strong partnerships with Squamish Nation and through this partnership have been able to restore salmon habitat in the upper Elaho River, along the Cheakamus, and throughout the traditional territory of Squamish Nation."

Ice At The North Pole
Oct. 12, 2021
Introducing THE SPEAKER |
|
The PeKa Project for Beautiful Gate 2
Oct. 19, 2021
The Speaker: Mr. Josh Lockington
Josh is a father and husband firstly, but also a public middle school teacher, traveler, coach, marriage mentor, tennis player and an ambassador for BGL 2!
Josh has traveled to more than 90 countries and volunteered in many. This includes helping in the construction of an AIDS clinic in The Gambia, West Africa, volunteering at a malnourished children's home in San Salvador, El Salvador, organizing a sports camp in rural Romania, site prep for the expansion of an orphanage in Primo Tapia, Mexico and caring for children who live at the local garbage dump in Guatemala city
The Adoption Story:
More than six years ago, we started the international adoption process as a way of adding to our family. Four and a half years later we were finally matched with a little boy from Lesotho! He is an amazing boy, full of energy and a zest for life and new experiences. After going to receive him, and spending eight weeks traveling the area, a passion began to grow for my son's country of birth and I started wondering how I could give back.
The BGL 2 Project:
Lesotho is a deeply suffering country, afflicted by overwhelming poverty (2 in 5 people live on less than $1 a day) and extreme disease (over 1 in 4 people are HIV positive). The children of Lesotho are sometimes abandoned in trash dumpsters, toilet pits, or found alone in a forest. In a nation of 1.9 million people, there are an estimated 300,000 orphaned children (approx 15% of the total population)
Beautiful Gate Orphanage gives many children in Lesotho the opportunity to be more than just one of these statistics. It strives to give them the opportunity to be children… and give them a chance at life. Its ultimate goal is finding them “forever families” in Lesotho and abroad.
However, the orphanage is at capacity and only mandated to take care of children up to the age of six. After that age, the children are forced into the broken Lesotho foster care system, where they very often end up a victim of human trafficking or child labour.
