Mar. 09, 2021
Thank you all for participating in last week's Rotary Club of Whistler Spirits Night in partnership with Montis Distilling. Not only was it a lot of fun, we also raised about $1,700 for the WCSS delivery truck refrigeration program. We are very close to our goal of $10,000 We are going to try this one more time, this time with a Martini focus. Very similar evening to Spirits Night. We are making a couple of changes. We will only be making/drinking 3 drinks, 2 Gin and 1 Vodka Martini. (4 drinks in 80 minutes was a bit much for me last time) We are also spreading out the time between Dani's bartending instruction to give more time to enjoy each creation. We are going to experiment with virtual "Chat Lounges". Between drinks you can move around to the various virtual Lounges, providing more opportunity to socialize. We can also set up named Lounges where you can invite your friends that are participating. i.e I might have one of the Lounges named Ken Martin and anyone can drop in and experience your martini with me and whoever is in the Lounge at the time. Have your own Lounge if you see fit.
Tuesday March 9th at 7PM. $30 per registrant gets you three 2 ounce bottles and a raffle ticket for more great wine and spirits. Martini making ingredient lists and suggested appies will be provided. Most importantly you get another great Dani bartending performance. (no Silent Auction this time)
Come join us again and get your friends out for a very social virtual get together in the Chat Lounges.
Register at https://tinyurl.com/March-Martini-Madness
See you March 9th.

MAC Project - "Bikes in Container for International Destination"
Apr. 06, 2021
Kathy White - Chair of Whistler MAC Board, and on behalf of our 55+ membership – I’m happy to share an outline of our activities and future project ideas. We are vibrant group of over 200 members, engaged and often volunteering in Whistler, while we enjoy “aging in place”. We are all an important part of the social fabric and provide economic benefit often through municipal taxes, also by supporting local restaurants, shops & services. MAC is hopeful to bring forward the idea of “donate a bike” project with the Rotary members and other community organizations. Similar to the previous project by Pat Montanihttps://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-pat-montani-and-bicycles-for-humanity- provide-transport-to-health-care/ |

Amorak Society Update
May 11, 2021
A followup on our clubs sponsorship of the Amorak Society work in Bangledish. Dr. Tanyss Munro has devoted her life, with her husband, best-selling author Gem Munro, to improving educational opportunities for vulnerable children and youth around the world. In Canada, they designed effective, new approaches to overcome chronic disadvantages faced by troubled indigenous communities through education. This pursuit took her from Canada's far north as Director of Education, to senior advisor for regional Indigenous governments, to Parliament Hill as senior advisor to Ministers of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. Tanyss and Gem founded Amarok Society in response to the still-ongoing education crisis where one in three children is growing up illiterate. Clearly a novel approach was needed – and they opened their first novel school in 2006. What binds the overlooked Indigenous populations and the illiterate, destitute women in mega-city slums, is the Munros conviction that these dismissed populations are as capable as anyone in the world of doing the impossible. For their work, they were recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. |

Georgia Straight Alliance
May 18, 2021
Christianne (she/her) has been GSA’s Executive Director since 2010 after spending 6 years as the organization’s Clean Air and Water Program Coordinator. She is an Ontario transplant who came to BC in 1995 to pursue a MSc in ecology at UBC and, like so many, stayed on after graduation. Christianne leads Georgia Strait Alliance’s government and media relations efforts, along with supporting GSA’s strategic campaigns and programs. She has a deep passion for social change and connecting with people across sectors to build a better future for our communities. Christianne sits on the Advisory Board of the Salish Sea Institute and is a Founding Board Director and President of The Elbow Theatre Society. She was a 2018 nominee for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award – Metro Vancouver (Environmental Sustainability) and a 2019 nominee for the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards (Social Change). She is a past Director of the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival (including 2 years as President), Canadian Women Voters Congress, and the Conservation Voters of BC. In her time off, she enjoys yoga, cooking/baking, kayaking, gardening, reading and sailing with her husband. She is an aunt to 7 amazing kids and godmother to 3 more.
In tonight's talk, you'll hear about the work of regional marine conservation organization Georgia Strait Alliance. For more than 30 years, GSA has tackled threats to the region - from pulp pollution to open net cage salmon farms, from sewage pollution to climate change - using a model of basing solutions on science, collaboration, and community engagement. The focus of the talk will be on the threats of climate change to our region and some innovative ways GSA is working to gain bold and accountable policies from all levels of government. You'll also hear about latest efforts to protect Southern Resident orcas and our work with the recreational boating community.
