Fake News
Sep. 11, 2018 7:00 a.m.
Chelsea, as the Technology & Support Services Librarian at the Whistler Library, brings a keen sence of what is and what is not to the table and promices to help us sort through the often confusing web of information out there. In this short session we’ll identify the key aspects of fake news, misinformation and disinformation, propaganda, satire, and clickbait, and learn to evaluate various online resources. Her presentation is based on an iteration of a talk given at the library called “No Sh*t" in which Chelsea aims to get us thinking critically about the information we consume. Chelsea is a librarian, news junkie, and avid reader whose career has spanned special, academic, and public libraries. She manages technology, circulation, and support services at the Whistler Public Library. She and her partner, also an academic, have resided in the Sea to Sky, since 2013 |

Spearhead Traverse Cabins
Sep. 25, 2018
Mitch will be providing an interesting update and pictures of the progress of the new Spearhead Traverse Cabin at Russett Lake. This is the cabin that our Bridget Daley (as featured in the Pique Magazine) has been the chief chef for over the past 2 summers. Most of you know Mitch from his outdoor leadership role at Whistler Secondary, his work with the Alpine Club building the many hiking trails we enjoy in the valley and his work on Avalanche awareness and preparation. This evening also marks the return to our wonderfull monthly Venue buffets and member, spouse and visitor social time. To register for the event click here. |

World Polio Day
Oct. 23, 2018
In March, Brian had the opportunity to participate in a National Immunization Day polio campaign in India. Although India has been polio-free since 2014, they still hold regular mass vaccinations campaigns. Brian will discuss what is involved in vaccinating 170 million children in 2 days, and his experience of personally vaccinating children in a rural village. Also included will be his first impressions of this diverse and fascinating country, and visits to some Rotary projects. Again, join us for our End Polio Now event at The Venue for their amazing buffet dinner and share a glass of wine or beer during social time with members, spouses and guests. Register here. |

Recycling & The Climate Reality Story
Dec. 18, 2018
My name is Taniell Hamilton and I have lived in Whistler the past 6 years. I was born and raised in Southern Alberta and spent my early twenties going to school and working around the world; New Zealand, Switzerland and Japan to name a few. In 2012 I graduated with an associates degree in Early Childhood Education and in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability Studies. I started working with WB as a kids ski instructor back in 2012 and moved into the role of "Waste Reduction Specialist" shortly after graduating. Recently, my position has changed to Assistant Sustainability Manager and my roles now include not only waste reduction, but also championing our internal green teams and training/educating our staff regarding all things environmental. The best thing about my role at WB is having the opportunity to motivate our workforce towards our sustainable initiatives and constantly being inspired by the efforts of those around me. |
