Ski Town Case Studies from Sun Valley & Telluride to Revelstoke's Innovation Corridor
Oct. 24, 2017
Harry is the Great ‘Envisioner’. Harry is the person who travels the world and devotes his life to understanding the es- sence of what makes resorts and tourism destinations successful. He has partici- pated in many United Nations panels and conferences as a key resource on sustain- able tourism and resort development. Since beginning his professional career as an architect and planner, Harry has worked on over 120 resort and tourism projects including planning and design in locations around the world, and led the revitalization of Whistler Resort in the 1990’s. For over 20 years, Harry has resided in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, the world’s ‘living laboratory’ of mountain resort development and experiments in tourism trends. He collaborated with Eldon Beck (the designer of Whistler Village) in preparing the first master plan for the Fernie Alpine Resort which defined the roadmap that the resort followed in moving from a regional ski hill to a year round boutique destination resort. Lorne Borgal Lorne has over 30 years of experience in resort development and operations. Combining his experience in industry and resorts with his education, he led the opening of the entire operating business of Blackcomb Resort. From there he led Whistler as President and Chief Executive Officer of Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation, and as Chairman and Director of the Whistler Resort Association during the most exciting and formative years of the resort. Under his leadership at Whistler, Lorne envisioned and created a service culture for Whistler that has endured to this day. He installed the first chair lift to the Peak and opened up the largest single lift ser- viced terrain expansion in the company’s history, he planned and constructed a major new restaurant in the high alpine, renovated company restaurants, ac- quired and expanded retail businesses and constructed the gondola from the valley to the mountain top which remains the major lift on the mountain and the only direct route from the village to the high alpine in the resort. |

Nov. 24, 2017 - Nov. 25, 2017
You are invited to sign-up for Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (this year on Friday, Nov. 24th. or Saturday, Nov. 25th.). You will be asked if you would like to be a guest or a host. (Some people choose to be a guest on one night and a host on the other night.) You will be asked if you would like to take part on the Friday or the Saturday night. It’s really helpful if you are flexible and can choose either. The people who are guests are given an address. They show up for dinner. The host doesn’t know who will be knocking on their door for dinner until they show up. Also, you don’t know who else you will be sitting down to dinner with. If you are a host, you will let us know the maximum people you can host. Then, we will let you know how many to expect for dinner. The host provides the meal as his or her contribution. The cost is $25.00 per person plus whatever you want to drink. The money goes to the Rotary Foundation. It is so much fun because it is a great chance to get to know your fellow Rotarians better!! Both Whistler Rotary Clubs take part!! If you ask anyone in your Club who has taken part before, I think they will tell you that it is a lot of fun!! You are welcome to invite a guest(s) to come with you. Beth, Diane, Sheila & Dave |

The Why we Belong to Rotary - A visit to our club funded Uganda projects and Ethiopia end Polio tour
Nov. 28, 2017

Nov. 28, 2017 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Doors open at 5:15ish, Meeting starts at 6:00ish. Buffet Dinner cost $26 (includes tax and gratuity) Have you ever wondered why we do what we do in Rotary? Or, what's the real impact of all of those pancake breakfasts, corn roasts and other Rotary fundraisers? On their recent trip to Uganda and Ethiopia, President Ken and Anette Martin went in search of answers to the above questions and they would like to share what they found. It was eye opening and very inspirational. How Rotary improves the lives of subsistence farming families in rural Uganda. What it's like to travel in Ethiopia with a group of Rotarians who have been involved in Polio eradication through immunization and survivor support over the past 20 years. There were many other aspects to their trip and if time allows they may show a few pictures for their animal tracking and safari trips in search of:
Please join us at The Venue restaurant for another great evening of socializing, dinner, and, of course, a great presentation. |

Dec. 05, 2017
Jamie Lauder is an entrepreneur and an outdoor enthusiast on a mindful mission to help connect the creative community of Whistler. With an educational background in Finance and a few years of marketing experience at Salomon sports, Jamie uprooted himself from Toronto and followed the magnetic pull of Whistler drawing him here 2 years ago. Since arriving, Jamie and business partner Dakota Park, have established a boutique branding studio, working with many local and national brands on marketing and communications. More recently, they have just launched a shared office in Function Junction that gives local creatives and professionals access to an inspiring and economical shared office space with all the perks.

Please let Marg know if you are interested in joining our excursion to Head of the Lake School on Dec 21st. It will be their last school day before the holidays and the students will be receiving the presents that our Club purchased and their teachers wrapped. They plan to have a luncheon for the students, give out the gifts... followed by a movie. (I did not assume we would be provided lunch so please bring a sandwich or snack).
If anyone knows someone with a Santa outfit that we could take it up to the school that day... and please let me know asap.
This is our first visit in a long time so they may be shy. Our goal is to re-establish our relationship and support and which may take a little time. It truly is a community that can use genuine support and I'm so pleased how many members have shown interest.
Please respond via email to me if you are planning to attend and if you are able to drive.
We will meet at Meadow Park at 9:30 am on Dec 21st.
Thanks,
Marg
